Dear Mr Leclercq,

We would like to thank you and the co-signatories for the open letter ”Democracy and Digital: trusted media and platform regulation” addressed to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and co-signed by a number of current and former MEPs as well as number of media policy experts.

The President has asked us to reply on her behalf.

The letter raises a number of critical issues requiring due consideration, long-term strategic thinking as well as coordinated action across policy areas. It touches upon a number of aspects, which are being addressed by the Commission or are in the pipeline, including actions to counter disinformation, build the resilience of our democratic systems, and to support media literacy and professional journalism.

The Open Letter proposes a number of ideas about how best to tackle the media sector in a holistic and forward-thinking manner building on the initiatives already underway.

We look forward to engaging with all stakeholders including your organisation and the signatories of the letter in the coming months to ensure that the Commission’s response effectively meets the challenges that you evoke in your letter.

Yours sincerely,

Věra Jourová,  Margrethe Vestager
